.How to get there
A wine list that even attracts renowned sommelières and fine food much more than a cat-preventative "foundation" - the Mast Weinbistro is convincing by the glass and on the plate. In an airy, modern ambience, taste meets conviviality and hospitality.
The treasure trove of the Mast Weinbistro is hidden in a narrow corridor between the guest room and the kitchen. Over 1000 bottles are stored in the illuminated wine cabinets, which stand close together on both sides and are filled with fine wines from all wine-loving countries.
France, Austria, Spain and Italy, but also Georgia, Croatia and Greece. They don't want to be pigeonholed, they say. In general, however, organic is the standard, and the focus is on natural wines that are sometimes funky and surprising but sometimes also quite classically developed and accessible.
Since the choice with such a range is difficult, it is best to leave the decision to the charming and competent staff. For an aperitif, there is dry cider from Switzerland and a wonderful crémant from the Jura, which tastes of more, but there is still so much else to discover...
Since "he who drinks well must also eat well", there is also a small, seasonally changing menu at Mast Weinbistro. As with the wines, whose producers Matthias Pitra and Steve Breitzke visit personally in the vineyards whenever possible, a lot of value is placed on trusting cooperation with producers when it comes to food. Vegetables, fish and meat come from small, sustainable farms - for which the kitchen was awarded a green star.
If you don't want to decide, choose the six-course chef's choice menu (75€, wine accompaniment is available for 49€). Of course, you can also choose freely from the menu, which is divided into "Bites", "Cold", and "Warm". The team around Chef Lukas Lacina obviously enjoys playing with suggestions and flavours from all over the world. Whole roasted carrots - the first of the season, harvested young, barely bigger than a little finger - are served with crispy quinoa and curd cheese, refreshed with bergamot.
The journey continues with juicy lahmacun and smoked carp - which I, having grown up in carp-crazy Franconia, must, of course, try. Instead of being deep-fried and accompanied by potatoes, the carp comes with hummus, pickled peppers and capers. Makes the Franconian carp look old!
Unfortunately, these first dishes are really only bites, the plates empty after two bites. But then come the subsequent courses (finely shaved kohlrabi and marinated lake trout), and the sorrow is forgotten. The warm, hearty finale is vegetarian gnochetti and tender braised lamb neck.
Conclusion: Eating at Mast Weinbistro is great fun. Thanks to the small portions, you can try a lot, the plates are not overloaded, and yet there is a lot to discover. The taste of the food is underlined by excellent wines. For dessert, I treat myself to a glass of crémant. It comes with coconut milk rice and strawberry ice cream, which tastes like biting into a freshly picked fruit in the strawberry field.
Wednesday to Friday is also open for lunch with a small lunch menu. In the evening, in addition to the multi-course menu - as a homage to the Viennese Heurigen tradition - a simple snack is also offered: Down-to-earth but no less tasty are the chilli Käsekrainer, the mountain cheese with potatoes or the bacon and ham selection.
In the warmer months, the Mast Weinbistro is extended by a small garden. Inside, the interior is modern, airy and full of playful details. Wine bottles gather on the walls and floor - some of the more than a thousand that have already been emptied here in deliciously cheerful company.
