As versatile as the Hotel Luc and the associated Heritage Restaurant are, we have already been able to get to know many aspects of the Hotel at Gendarmenmarkt. So this time, we gathered for breakfast. Relaxed, on a Sunday at eleven o'clock, when you can actually move on to brunch.

Let me say this beforehand: Hotel Luc does not offer an explicit brunch but a hybrid of breakfast and lunch menu, which can be combined just as well.

Breakfast in a hotel? By now, it is well known that non-guests should not be afraid to visit a hotel restaurant. On the premises of the Heritage restaurant, which takes over daily from 6 p.m., you can also have a relaxed breakfast as a Berliner, because the food is always served à la carte.

It pays to get up early. The first menu is valid from 6 to 11 a.m. and includes breakfast dishes as well as well-balanced étagères, ideal for a romantic start to the morning for two.

However, since we prefer to sleep in a bit, our first meal of the day, in this case, moves to the second breakfast menu, from which some brunch combinations can be put together just as well. According to restaurant manager Barbara Bordiehn, the combination of Eggs Benedict and the potato order, for example, is particularly popular. Like so much of the hotel's concept, the latter is a reminiscence of the Old Fritz.

The choice is not easy, as the Petit Dejeuners menu - probably also dedicated to the Prussian king's love of French - offers a few options.

However, we decide on the Anglais breakfast, i.e. the English Breakfast. This is an absolute breakfast classic, but as experience has shown, it is served in marked differences in quality. My companion, on the other hand, chooses the Turkish breakfast.

The components of the English breakfast (22 euros) are set: fried eggs, baked beans, grilled tomato, sausages, bacon and Portobello mushrooms, plus the classic toast.

Here it's the subtle differences that separate the wheat from the chaff. Do the beans taste homemade, or are they from a can? Do the eggs and bacon have the desired consistency? Are the mushrooms tastily prepared? In the case of Hotel Luc, all questions can be answered with a "Yes!" so that I think back joyfully to my time in England when I enjoyed it.

On the other hand, the vegetarian Turc (25 euros) is based on fresh and spicy Turkish cuisine: crispy sigara börek and bulgur köfte are accompanied by grilled vegetables. This is accompanied by the classic Turkish egg dish menemen, with some feta cheese in an ice cream cone as a creative twist. A kind of deconstructed ayran, served in a cocktail glass, unfolds its full aroma when stirred.

The breakfast menu at Hotel Luc, like that at Heritage, is constantly changing and is adapted seasonally. For example, the different breakfasts change with a country focus; there was still a Japanese breakfast on a previous visit.

We round off the meal with an Ocean Bowl, not least because of its Instagramability. A kind of fruit smoothie in a plate, it is decorated in Prussian blue - once again in keeping with the motto of Hotel Luc. Spirulina, cashew crumble, banana, dates and coconut combined in one bowl make it just as much a bird of paradise as the Old Fritz is said to have been at heart.
