.How to get there

The Gendarmenmarkt in Berlins historical Mitte is considered to be the most beautiful place in the city if not even the most beautiful place north of the Alps. The Ensemble of the Konzerthaus and the French and German Cathedrals is sole of consummate harmony. During the summer months, people can enjoy the blasting of Orchestras by the "Classic Open Air" events, while in the cold months the place transforms into a winter wonderland Christmas market.

According to the plans by Jonathan Nering, Friedrich I. had the area of Friedrichstadt built at the end of the 17th century. Especially Huguenots, who had fled from France to Prussia at that time, lived here. Therefore, the French Reformed congregation received one church on the square and the Lutheran congregation the other church.

Moving forward, Friedrich Schinkel was ordered by Friedrich II. to build the present Konzerthaus between the two cathedrals. It is one of Berlins most famous Konzerthäuser. Unfortunately, the square fell victim to the bombardments of the Second World War. On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Berlin, the square was rebuilt and got its historical name back after the reunification in 1991.

Whoever wants to wake up in the morning to a glorious view on the Gendarmenmarkt, is recommended to stay at the Regent Hotel Berlin. Some popular places near the square are, the famous Borchardt Restaurant, the unique shopping temple The Corner and recently also the Pierre Boulez Saal.
