Only half a year after opening, it received a toque from Gault Millau. Wirtschaft am Markt is the first market restaurant to receive this honour. And rightly so, because chef Heidi Ratzinger and her team serve up hearty market cuisine of the highest standard. Down-to-earth but creative. Traditional, but surprising. In short: feel-good cuisine that is a pleasure to eat.

The chef, who worked for many years as sous chef for cooking legend Christian Petz, combines classics of Austrian cuisine with international influences: Harissa and curry join calf's head and char, börek with Viennese boiled beef and yuzu mayonnaise with beef tartare. True to the culinary motto of the establishment: "The world meets Vienna."

There could hardly be a better location than Meidlinger Markt, which is somewhat hidden and away from the crowds in the 12th district. Founded in the 19th century, it long served as a supply for the local population. But, in the past decades, it has been somewhat forgotten - the ravages of time have taken their toll on the partly empty huts.

For some years now, however, a breath of fresh air has been blowing through the market alleys. Today the Meidlinger Markt is the heart of the multicultural quarter. Old-established stalls meet young food entrepreneurs, traditional dishes meet international cuisine.

During the day, Wirtschaft am Markt offers a reduced menu with classics from beef soup to matjes, and at lunchtime, there is also a vegetarian dish of the day and one with fish or meat. In addition, Patissière Alessandra Ranelli, who recently joined the team, provides guests with cakes and desserts. On Saturdays, the restaurant opens in the morning to serve delicate breakfast dishes from Vienna and all over the world.

Some of the ingredients come directly from the neighbouring market stalls. The atmosphere at Meidlinger Markt is relaxed and confidential. This also applies to Wirtschaft am Markt with its modern, simple interior and friendly service.

It's especially lovely in summer when you can sit outside. I don't know how many times I've sat there, enjoying the excellent food and the lively market flair. Add a cool white wine and the summer evening is perfect!
Thanks to the attached vinotheque and extensive wine list, the visit is also worthwhile for those who just want to enjoy a relaxing glass of wine.

I finally went there again recently. Despite a long absence due to the pandemic, we were welcomed like old acquaintances. The food was, as always, a delight: the crispy baked celery with a winter salad, the wonderfully creamy beef tartare with egg and paprika chutney, the delicately braised veal Vege with mushrooms and (Austrian!) rice.

For dessert, we had powidltascherl and crème brulée - and the team had once again proven that they absolutely deserved the toque.
