Chef Lukas Reiter is cooking. The nephew and the niece's best friend help in the service. Partner Marlies makes sure that every guest who comes in immediately feels at home, and meanwhile, grandma looks after Anton, the couple's few-month-old son. So not only is  Familie Reiter in Hietzing an honest family business - you also immediately feel like you belong to the family.

True to the motto of Lukas' great-grandmother Philomena: "Five are invited, ten have come, take water for soup, welcome all." After a suitably warm welcome, we are allowed to take our seats at a table turned flower meadow. A charming flea market find - as is the rest of the place: vintage sideboards reminiscent of grandma's kitchen, marble bistro tables, fluffy carpets and teddy fur armchairs in which you could dream away an entire afternoon.

When Marlies then also encourages you to move the tables around as you please or to move to the sofa corner for that lovely walk, you genuinely feel as if you are in your living room at home. The only difference is that here you can lean back comfortably while Lukas Reiter conjures up sweet and savoury treats. The food is seasonal, made from ingredients that come from organic farmers and local businesses.

The menu also bears the signature of family members and friends of the Reiter family: Holzi, for example, who apparently likes to eat ham and cheese croissants with chive sauce after his party nights ("Holzi's all-night night"), or friend Jakob, who seems to have a soft spot for vegan porridge with fruits and nuts.

The menu includes everything a breakfast heart desires. And much more: a cooked egg, for example - creamy like a praline because it is cooked sous vide - with potato foam, pumpernickel crunch and spicy cheese shavings from the Belper tuber. Another discovery is the chocolate hummus dressed with cocoa, accompanied by juicy bread from the city's well-known organic bakery Öfferl. They also make sweet pastries like cruffins, which the Reiter family serves with lemon and curd cream.

Like at home with grandma, lunch is served punctually at half-past eleven: seasonal feel-good dishes such as asparagus risotto or creamy ham fritters. You can taste the years of experience and passion Lukas Reiter brings to his job. His love of cooking comes - how could it be otherwise - from great-grandma Philomena and grandma Rotraud, from whom little Lukas learned his first recipes.

With his own restaurant, a long-cherished dream came true for the 37-year-old, who was most recently head chef at the city wine tavern Heu & Gabel. Thanks to its first-class food, warm service and quiet location in the secluded inner courtyard, the Familie Reiter clearly has regular café potential.

Admittedly: For some, the journey to the western 13th district may take a little longer. But a visit to Familie Reiter can be combined with a trip to Schönbrunn Palace or the extensive Lainzer Tiergarten!
