New life has been breathed into an old coffee house in one of Vienna's most secluded squares. At Treu am Platzl, Viennese tradition meets modern food, relaxed service and Italian flair. A place to linger - from the first-morning coffee to a late evening nightcap.

"Ciao a tutti," says the singer, sitting at his piano directly behind the vast guest garden surrounded by plants. In the background, the baroque façade of the Maria Treu parish rises into the rosy evening sky. With such a piazza atmosphere, one simply has to speak a little Italian. He is right.

Jodok-Fink-Platz, where the Treu am Platzl is located, is one of the most beautiful and secluded in Vienna. For over 100 years, the Café Maria Treu was situated on the corner, a time-honoured Viennese coffee house with plush seating areas, a lavish cake counter and mountains of newspapers and magazines.

In the summer, the Treu am Platzl moved into the corner pub. Not only has the name (partly) remained, but also the homemade cakes, the newspapers and the cosy coffee house atmosphere with its rustic furniture. But there is also a lot that is new.

The outdoor area has been transformed into a cosy oasis, and the menu has been expanded to include colourful dishes from all over the world: cheesecake and blueberry pancakes, BBQ-pulled chicken and homemade sage gnocchi, surprising cocktails and fine wines.

The list shows: Treu am Platzl is a place for any time of day or night. Breakfast is available until 2:30pm (until 3:00pm on weekends).

Intolerances are skilfully catered for here. For example, a gluten-free, vegan option is the sweet, sweet potato - filled with peanut butter, banana cream, granola, almond yoghurt and berries.

If the sumptuous breakfast menu isn't enough, the full lunch and dinner menu is available from half past eleven. On weekdays, there is also a small lunch menu consisting of a main course and soup or salad.

They want to be a place for everyone to linger. The team at Treu am Platzl has succeeded in this, as a glance at the surrounding tables testifies. The audience this evening is a colourful mix.

The night is still young, so we start comfortably with a round of aperitifs. While the sun slowly disappears behind the houses and the musicians sing about distant countries, I enjoy my tangy French Gardener with basil vermouth.

At some point (you completely forget the time when you're sitting here...), our starters arrive - including a perfectly seasoned gazpacho that tastes like summer. This is followed by a juicy pulled chicken with hand-cut Treu fries and a whole braised spicy melanzani.

You must try the apricot cake. Next time! But a little glass of chocolate mousse is a must. When we leave, the stars are shining in the sky, grasses are tinkling, and the music is still playing. Piazza atmosphere in the middle of Vienna.
