Hardly any other district in Hamburg is as full of contrasts as St. Georg. From the expensive addresses with a view of the Alster to the rough Steindamm, the difference couldn't be more significant. In the centre is Lange Reihe, which is always exciting in culinary and cultural terms, with its new and long-established establishments. Café Gnosa has been one of the latter for over 80 years.

Old-established and yet by no means old, that is the charm of the popular queer Café Gnosa. There has been a café on this site since the turn of the century, taken over by the Gnosa couple in 1939 and redesigned in the 1950s in the style that still defines the cosy interior today with its red-upholstered chairs and marble tables.

The retro furnishings are used charmingly, and nothing looks too old or worn. Instead, you feel at home in this classic coffee house amid a changeable, heavily gentrified neighbourhood. The clientele is just as varied. Queer regulars sit here alongside families and young coffee drinkers.

Owner Michael Morche-Yeh's holistic concept is worth a visit at any time of day. First and foremost are the varied cakes from the in-house patisserie. Whether gooseberry meringue, Sachertorte, meringue or Black Forest kirsch, the daily changing selection leaves nothing to be desired.
But Café Gnosa also has a savoury side. The various breakfasts, from vegetarian to cheese and sausage to the Nordic salmon breakfast, are also served for late risers until 4 pm. A changing lunch and dinner menu tempts you with soups, salads, quiches, gratins and much more.

Thanks to its location, a visit to Café Gnosa can also be combined with a stroll along the Alster or simply a tasty snack before leaving the main railway station. But be careful: bring some time with you, because this long-established café is as popular as ever and well frequented.
