Orangerie Neukölln
Schierker Straße 8

.How to get there
As eternal seekers of the most beautiful places in Berlin, we were inevitably drawn here. The Orangerie Neukölln has without question one of the most beautiful terraces in the city. Somewhat hidden away, under the staircase leading to the enchanting Körnerpark, it captivates with its Tuscan charm, not just because of its unique location.
Large white parasols provide shade in this year's summer heat, lush green trees peek out from the park onto the piazza that adjoins the classic-looking landing, and further back, a water feature splashes and glistens in the sun. Lush green also surrounds the façade of the orangery, pierced by high arched windows, behind which there is a glimpse of the stylishly spruced-up interior.
You'll love settling down here and immediately discover what's tasting good at the neighbouring tables: Spritz in all its multifaceted glory. We like the version with the artichoke bitters Cynar just as much as the Venetian served with Select and olive. There are several other versions, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic. The Orangerie version, for example, is served with Martini Fiero Bitter, tonic and sparkling wine. The latter comes on tap from a sophisticated apparatus.
Monument protection and strict regulations made several months of construction necessary in order to install a bar system. Now, however, the Orangerie Neukölln presents itself in a modern light that nevertheless shows off the classical features. The ceilings measure 6.8 metres, and art on the walls, as well as on the picturesque terrace is in planning in collaboration with the gallery next door.
Owners Simon and Max know each other from their studies in hotel management and have already worked together in a restaurant in Berlin. Now they have found a real gem in the Orangerie Neukölln and staged it as such. It's clear to them that the location is their unique selling point: "First of all it's the location, then it's what's in the glass and in the future maybe also what's on the plate," says Simon.
As far as the food is concerned, the Orangerie Neukölln starts off small, but without sacrificing the taste. One lunch dish is served, which changes weekly, if capacity allows, sometimes two. What Simon and Max personally like is put on the plate - regional and seasonal, of course.
During our visit, we had a wonderfully summery dish with marinated tomatoes from the surrounding countryside, chicory, basil from the princess gardens and white bean puree. The lemon focaccia served with it doesn't have to hide behind the new summer greeting, as it's wonderfully chewy, fresh, and a fabulous addition for dipping. It's accompanied by daily changing cakes and tarts - always vegan, by the way.
And although we likeed the delicate dishes, you don't come here to eat but to linger. And then drink a glass of Spritz. And because it's so lovely, another one. And another. In this little big-city oasis that really deserves its name.
