Altbau im Rose Garden
Alte Schönhauser Straße 61
10119 Berlin-Mitte
.How to get there
Dark velvet curtains bath the Altbau in a dim light. Muted music fills the room. The man behind the bar wears a vest and a flat cap. Tino Hiller is well known among Berlin’s most renowned bars. Many herbs, seasonal ingredients and homemade infusions are all part of the bar’s philosophy.
Altbau in the restaurant Rose Garden near Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz feels like a speakeasy, the elicit establishments that sold drinks in Prohibition-era America. Red brick walls, mixed in with street art by Skim and Alias, an original spray can from Mr. Brainwash and, beneath a glass dome on the long counter: a red-and-white Tintin rocket.
Green plants dangle from the ceiling. On the menu, though, you’ll find familiar classics, like the Manhattan, the Scotsman or the Prince of Wales. Creative, harmonious drinks are individually mixed based on guests’ wants. One of the mainstays here is the connection between the modern and the traditional.
Rose Garden itself isn’t a self-catering deli anymore, those times are gone. Now there is table service, fresh crossover cooking with regional products for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Beef tartar, risotto, burgers, surf and turf. From morning to evening at the all-day bar, before it turns into a restaurant, with drinks from Altbau, naturally.
