I’ve finally managed to visit designer Atil Kutoglu in his Vienna studio. I came to see him more frequently in his flagship store during my earlier time in Istanbul and could never resist one of his pieces here and there.

Born in Istanbul, he attended a German school there and came to Vienna for university. His clothes are a blend of occident and oriental. The latter is incorporated much more subtly into his pieces, tenderly embossed into the leather of a filmy creme leather coat that has me hooked right away.

Atil’s gowns are presented at the large fashion shows in Milan, New York, and Paris- and yet, they can be worn any day by any woman. I slip into one, then another, trying on blazers and skirts as well.

I love the private atmosphere of the shop. The master himself sits on a sofa of his own design and personally gives feedback on each piece.

Despite his international success, the fashion designer has remained surprisingly humble and so easy to like. He offers to make small alterations here and there, until everything is perfect; he puts his entire soul into his work.

One particularly dreamy, glittering velvet dress has my attention- and the next ball season is coming. I’m swept away and would love to take it straight with me.

Men can also find a small selection of accessories, although Atil primarily works in women’s fashion. Fantastic outfits comprised of a dress and blazer in delicate ice colours à la Jacki O. are simultaneously elegant and lively. They pair well with jeans too, and are made of the finest material. Simply dresses to feel good in.

No wonder so many celebrities dress themselves in Atil. Dagmar Koller was one of the first to express excitement for his designs- today many more famous customers do as well. Last ball season he also designed a limited "Alles Walzer" collection for Peek & Cloppenburg.

He’s a little viennese, a little istanbulite, and a little new yorker all at the same time, and lets each of these inspire his style.

With a little luck you may find him around once a month in his Vienna studio. If you’re headed to Istanbul, you can visit him in the Nisantasi district.

And soon you’ll also be able to marvel at his knack for interior design, as he’s currently working on a few rooms for Hotel Altstadt Vienna. I can’t wait for the opening, which is scheduled for autumn.
