"Just let them eat the cake..." is what pops into one's head when confronted with the word monarchy and the delicate pastel display of Zuckermonarchie. This is how it is put into Marie Antoinette's mouth, but historically this statement is known to be unprovable. Nevertheless, the French queen with a weakness for beauty would definitely have felt at home at Zuckermonarchie in St. Pauli.

Delicate pink sets the tone here; tempting macarons are stored behind glass along with luscious cakes, artfully prepared tartelettes and sweet cupcakes, as well as scooped chocolate bars, homemade fruit spreads and light meringue kisses - a delicious sight and a princely addition to any afternoon coffee table.

But that's not what we're here for today, although we will, of course, still be able to enjoy the fine confectionery. Nevertheless, we'll talk about that later. First, we treat ourselves to a queenly breakfast, appropriately named: Catherine the Great. It comes with the finest cold cuts from master butcher Fischer or vegetarian with a fine selection of cheeses and avocado. In addition to our coffee in pink cups, the service brings orange juice and a lavishly filled three-tier étagère.

In addition to the above-mentioned fruit spread, there is a fruit salad with Greek yoghurt and roasted nuts, as well as a homemade mini crispbread with cream cheese or - just as sweet as sugar - butter in the shape of a heart. In addition, there is a small selection of bread rolls, including a croissant that is surprisingly close to the French original. We were also allowed to choose a tartlet or a piece of cake from the display case described above.

We chose a delicious looking and tasting tartlet called Princesa Limón, a tart filled with lemon curd, delicately flamed meringue and candied lemon peel, and a piece of Lady Lemon Curd, a delicately tart cheesecake also with lemon curd and fresh berries on top. Both are creamy, lemony, delicious - befitting a queen.

And because nobility is known to be bound to nobility, all of the Zuckermonarchie's treats are homemade using the highest quality ingredients such as organic eggs, Belgian chocolate, bourbon vanilla and fresh fruit.

If you're not in the mood for sugar for brunch, we recommend the British Afternoon Tea at Zuckermonarchie. You can also order in advance and enjoy the three-tiered étagère with homemade scones, macarons, tartlets and savoury mini-sandwiches. Or you can pick up your favourite selection of delicious confectionery for a royal afternoon coffee within your own palace walls.
