.How to get there
With determined hands, owner Gunvor Schmalisch has put together an exquisite selection of exclusive designs and exceptional pieces from luxury labels for her small, puristic shop on Steinstraße. Gunvor feels like a tidy walk-in closet full of the edgiest clothing from the last two decades.
Every piece here is a small work of art. Alongside labels like Wunderkind, Alaia, or Dries van Noten, I discover designers I've never heard of and find inspiration in a skirt from 1996 which Belgian designer Walter von Beirendonck adorned with a shiny metallic lego man.
Gunvor Schmalisch has a story for each piece of clothing, each accessory, and even the jewellery labels Bergnerschmidt and Susanne Elstner. Of the pieces given to her on commission, she passionately selects only the most beautiful. No wonder this shop is a longtime dream come true for the former cultural manager.
Art and design have always played a role in her life. "My grandpa owned an engraving house, my dad designed sponge bags, and we’ve been painting, drawing, and sewing at home for as long as I can remember." As a young girl, she sewed 20s-style dresses for herself.
Today she's particularly well-versed in avant-garde vintage couture. "I'm really into avant-garde fashion designers like Walter von Beirendonck, Rick Owens, and Maison Martin Margiela, who focus on the uniqueness of each piece by considering cut, material, and the occasion- always emphasising the individual," she says.
But she's also always open for social projects. She's currently excited about working on a charity project with All Balushe, a label whose proceeds go to Save the Children Deutschland e.V. The young designer Berna Elsner’s extravagant designs are produced with the utmost care completely by hand in her Berlin workshop.
Another customer is trying on an intricately wrought dress from the collection. "I'd go for that too," I think. But then it's sold and I'm left with a Wunderkind dress that also struck my fancy. Since there's always something new to discover, it's worth checking out Gunvor regularly- you wouldn't want to miss anything!
