I would have never stumbled across the low-carb restaurant Lowkal in Wilmersdorf by accident. It sits unassumingly down a side street of Ludwigkirchplatz, and lunch here would have never been on the cards had a friend of mine not recently drawn my attention to it.

It’s been a year since Nadja Müller, a nutritionist with a master’s in health management, and Jens Bernert, a chef and dietary cook, made their dream a reality: launching their very own restaurant Lowkal. Ever since, they’ve been showing customers how delicious a low-carb diet can be.

The menu changes every three months, the lunch menu even weekly. The food is seasonal, and makes good use of local ingredients. Everything is prepared à-la-minute with fresh ingredients, so that dishes can easily be adapted to food intolerances or special requests.

The peas are the exception: they’re the only thing out of the freezer. But that shouldn’t discourage from trying the pea and mint soup with a chicken satay skewer. The lovely starter shares the menu with delightful quinoa-spinach fritters atop a piquant tomato salsa, as well as currywurst with a delectable sauce, homemade fried onions and Spätzle made of almond flour.

Excitement is in the air. This, we did not expect. And following this kind of an introduction, the mains don’t fall short either. "Gurnard filet with an olive-lemon sauce, peppers and eggplant mousse", as well as "asparagus two ways" with a vivid green pea puree and salad as a side, have won us over for a second time.

But like we said, low-carb food can fill you up, and so we wistfully turn down the chocolate-orange cake with pistachio ice cream. Instead, Nadja Müller serves up an iced coffee on our request. The drink isn’t even on the menu. She just makes it. That’s flexible for you!
