Wunderkind Wolfgang Joop's Masterstrokes

Ever since I've been interested in fashion, he's been there: "The Joop" as an old Danish colleague, who wasn't in perfect command of speaking German, used to call him in admiration. He was a fan of Joop's fashion sense and creativity much like me.

As a native Northerner I still remember pressing my nose against his first Hamburg shop's windows decades ago. Back then, stores like this were still called boutiques and generally resembled one another very much. Wolfgang Joop's boutique however was different and so, as a little girl, I stood in front of his big shop windows awe-struck, gazing at the beauty.

A long time has passed ever since. Joop sold his brand, which lost its soul under new and foreign direction. He kept himself busy during this whole time, continued designing and drafting, and never really left the stage. I haven't been as enchanted by his work as much though, that was up until I discovered a couple of pieces of his first Wunderkind collection at Quartier 206 a few years ago.

What a genius! It was so much more than fashion, it was art. Not affordable for me, it remained what it had always been: innovative, daring and simply stunning.

Wunderkind, German for prodigy, went through some rough patches financially. The flagship store on Gendarmenmarkt had to close its doors and it didn't seem like they were going to make it. Fortunately, the label is back now and so is the store: the little space on Tucholskystraße so far functioned as a vintage store for past collections.

Now here they are again: those breathtaking creations perfected with whimsical details and of remarkable craftsmanship. The only question left to be answered is why so far, relatively few people have recognized the uniqueness of Wunderkind. To me, there's not much in fashion that could outdo this prodigy right now!
