It’s Monday night. Knesebeckstraße is deserted, but Enoteca l’Angolino is booked solid. Pink checkered wallpaper, plain dark wooden tables, wine shelves and a display full of antipasti and other delicacies. Simple, yet intriguing, this interior is unveiled behind the floor-to-ceiling windows and basically asks you to step inside.

Angolino is actually named Claudio Bragato. He opened up the small restaurant in 2010. Ivan Martinelli is chef de cuisine. He arranges excitingly varying weekly menus and a daily changing business lunch. We decided to go for the weekly specials. Along with fresh bread, outstandingly delicate olive oil and a glass of table wine, we went on to order: ‘Guinea fowl rolls with red wine marinated pear’, ‘fresh spinach with roasted bacon, Parmesan and pine nuts’, and an ‘eggplant casserole’ for starters.

For the second round, the men of the group decided to go with ’venison ragout with tagliatelle’ which turned out to be one of the night’s highlights. Impeccable! The main course of our choice were ‘braised ox cheeks, wild broccoli and potatoes au gratin’, as well as ‘entrecôte with vegetables and mashed potatoes’. The ox cheeks practically melt in your mouth and the sauce is pure joy. I hear nothing but praise for the entrecôte as well.

All dishes are spiced timidly, no prevailing of garlic or salt, above all stands the taste of each ingredient by itself. Thrillingly authentic cuisine! And the service makes the whole experience come full circle. Especially Bragato’s daughter who is relentlessly making an effort without making a scene. “Come as a guest, leave as a friend”, it says on their website, and I wholeheartedly approve.
