When I first entered Baby Manufactur on Pariser Straße, I instantly felt this yearning that any woman will know from entering children's stores. And if it's a real gem at that, like this one in particular, there is just no stopping me. Countless white cabinets, tiny beds, miniature shelves filled with plaid cushions, bed clothing, bedrolls, baby clothes and toys, stacked along the walls cause a true shopping frenzy and...well, I cannot deny it, the subtle wish for babies.

The product range shows much love and attention as most of it is not your average commercial kids' articles but rare objects from small brands. Apart from a few renowned labels such as Brio, Trousselier and Djeco, none of the names were known to me. And according to what owner Kristine Stüvecke told me, it is part of her concept to buy from smaller manufacturers and make individual products, such as customized cutlery, bags, jewelry and loads of textiles easily available.

Since 2008, when they were still located at Stilwerk and sold furniture exclusively, she and her husband have been working the store together. Furniture still is the central matter at Baby Manufactur, and definitely the main focus of any children's room planning session that takes place here. These involve a personal visit by interior architect Christine Montag who not only gives advice on the choice of furniture, but also on matching wallpapers, lamps and accessories.

As I was standing inside, I couldn't tell whether it all felt more like Hamburg or Paris – it definitely didn't feel like Berlin. A true storybook universe! The furniture comes from selected brands such as Oliver Furniture, Isle of Dog or Wood Work. There's a wonderful 'Growing Table' that grows in sync with your children, and a classic bassinet like the one our family used to have for every generation's offspring.

I went for whimsically designed postcards, handmade pinboards and a little Trousselier bunny. - That would be a present for my photographer's newborn, I figured. - Right by the entrance you'll find beautiful plain leather wristlet with little lockets for engravings, tiny barrettes and lovely children's jewelry pieces.

For soon-to-be parents, there's a starter-package including everything from rompers to diaper pail. Individuality and customer service are top priorities, which is why they make unusual wishes such as cushions with individualized name embroideries possible, and even ship them from one day to the next.
