Andreas Kurkowitz, two-time German ‚Colour Technician of the Year’ with yet another nomination coming up for 2013 was one the best tips i've been given lately. Being highly specialised in colouring only, the London-based hairdresser has built a faithful and continously growing fanbase that has him return to Berlin every few weeks for exclusive appointments at Robert Stranz' salon in Mitte.
When he left his hometown of Wernigerode in the Harz mountains as a teenager to go to art school, a fateful encounter convinced Andreas to use his creativity and keen sense of style as a colourist instead. A colourist and nothing but! At Aveda on Kurfürstendamm he managed to start an apprenticeship as a colour techician without a prior hairdressing education, which is very uncommon in Germany. This paved the way for his live-long devotion to colour, albeit a little different than originally intended.
He has been working for 2 years now at world-renowned Josh Wood Atelier in Notting Hill and its branch in my beloved Liberty's department store. Aside from looking after his A-list clientele there, he preps models' hair and creates wigs for shootings and the fashion week shows in New York, Paris and Milan - yet never neglecting his Berlin regulars!

Yesterday i managed to book one of his highly coveted appointments to convince myself of his expertise. My first impression: the man knows what he's doing! I felt in really good hands immediateley. Within a few minutes he sets out a tailor-made plan of action for me and gets going. I have never experienced anybody section and place highlights as meticulously as him. The procedure seems a tad time-consuming at first, however the final outcomeis a hundred per cent worth the wait!
While the maestro is working my strands he chats about his life in London, fixing bad colour jobs for his first time customers, the ultimate hair care regimen and his future career plans. On top of that he is dying a wig for a photo shoot he's doing in the afternoon. "It's like cooking", he deadpans, an egg beater in hand and whisking some bleach about in a big bucket.
Fittingly, the minute I check on the result in the mirror, Tim Raue and his Michelin-starred creations come to mind. I am absolutely delighted and decide to not do without this luxury from now on. Leaving the studio with a beaming smile, I get the first compliment for my new hair colour right next door already, at International Wardrobe. What else could you hope for?
