Good design is of great importance to many people, from private households to public spaces. Good design also plays a crucial role for us as a lifestyle magazine. Be it the boutique hotels presented by Ella Fogg, the restaurants we visit, which increasingly attract attention with their emphatically simple interiors inspired by Scandi and Japanese aesthetics, or simply our favourite local or online shops.
So what suits us better than a design fair where all this comes together? Blickfang, Europe's most prominent design shopping event, invites you to get to know new products and brands on-site and the creative minds behind them.
From 20 to 22 October, the Blickfang fair invites you to the MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts. This fair is a very special one because Blickfang in Vienna is celebrating its 20th birthday. That is why there are a particularly large number of exhibitors at this edition. During the fair, around 150 independent design labels from the fields of furniture, lighting, home accessories, fashion and jewellery can be found here. At stands ranging in size from 4 to 25 square metres, the objects can be closely examined, and the intentions behind the designs can be found out, as the makers themselves will be present and available to answer questions.
The exhibitors are carefully selected by a jury to present only the best labels with the strongest concepts. Blickfang has a long tradition. Founded 30 years ago by Dieter Hofmann, it now takes place in Basel, Vienna, Zurich, Stuttgart and Hamburg. What sets it apart from other design fairs is the opportunity to buy the beautiful pieces directly.
The exhibiting labels come from all over Europe and are united in their efforts against the throwaway society and mass-produced goods. Among them are some Creme Guide favourites, such as the tasteful and sustainable yoga accessories by the Berlin label Studio Lietz.
Whether it's fashion or furniture, Blickfang's desire is to create a place far removed from the same old furnishings and clothing of large corporations and, simultaneously, offer a platform for labels that are close and suitable for everyday use. Inspiration, individuality and innovation are foregrounded when Blickfang transforms the MAK into a large concept store.
This October, design enthusiasts and those who want to become one can experience handmade design up close.
