Guru is Copenhagen’s oldest Indian restaurant. The Ahluwalia family founded it back in 1972 and today it’s owned and run by their son Ricky. I was invited by Ricky a few weeks ago to enjoy a meal at Gura.

I arrived to the place full of high expectations because I really love indian food and the culture surrounding it. When I entered I was immediately met by Ricky who himself is so welcoming and delightful – I felt like home right away.

The restaurant was recently closed for 5 months due to a total refurbishment and makeover. The place is a killer now. Next to the bar is a very cool lounge area (hello after work drinks)! I was visiting the Guru on a Wednesday night and the place was packed with both local and international visitors.

Ricky served me all the best of the menu. This included classic dishes such as butter chicken, tandoori chicken, Tikka masala, a few lamb dishes and various dips and some fresh prepared naan bread from the special installed oven in the restaurant. The oven is actually displayed so you can watch when the staff prepare the bread for you.

Everything is so amazing and you can taste that everything is made from scratch in the kitchen. The chef is not buying any prepared spices or saucebases – and you can really tell the difference and the hard work they put into every single dish on the menu.

Ricky strongly recommended me to enjoy a beer and not wine with the food. The beer will not interrupt the many flavors of the food and I think that is a great choice. So I enjoyed a Mango lassi and an Indian beer with my tasting menu. For dessert I tried the pistachio kulfi with caramelized nuts sprinkled with fresh lavender it was so wonderful and refreshing after all the heavy dishes.

If you are looking for a cultural experience and want to bomb your senses I strongly recommend that you visit Guru. The hospitality and the friendly staff will not let you down. And if you rather stay at home you can also order take away from the beautiful take away store next door to the restaurant.

It offers a small range of Guru products to accomplish your meal at home or serve for your guests. Ricki gave me two mango lassi’s to bring home and my kids loved me the next day for that. I will for sure be back soon and enjoy some more amazing Indian food. No curry – no hurry!
