Sitting at a single winery's wine tasting, you really get to know the facets of different vintages, terroirs, ripening times and more. Direct comparison is the best way to taste and understand the oenological nuances. But it is a long way from Berlin to the next winery. So it's a good thing that Christian Wemhoff from the Hoffgarten restaurant regularly invites vintners to present their products at the vintners' evening with delicious accompaniment from his kitchen.

The next evening is now coming up. On 17 April, it's off to Baden-Württemberg coming to the Hoffgarten. Jürgen Ellwanger from Winterbach will present the fine wines from his 26-hectare vineyard to accompany Christian's 5-course menu.

Winegrowing has a 500-year tradition in the Ellwanger family. At Weingut Ellwanger, 65 percent of the wine is red and 35 percent white. Traditional varieties of the region, such as Riesling, Lemberger and Trollinger grow here, as well as newer grape varieties for the local climes, such as Zweigelt, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay.

So the guests at the winegrowers' evening can look forward to an oenological journey that sounds just as promising as the menu. It starts with marinated kohlrabi with pistachio cream, lemon verbena and oat milk. This is followed by an earthy course of ravioli in a mushroom broth of mushrooms, herb oyster mushrooms, and beech mushrooms.

The taste buds are then neutralised with parsley ice cream with Vintner's sparkling wine. The main course is veal cheeks with confit potatoes, finger carrots and croutons. The thought of an intense jus and a glass of red wine makes the heart beat faster. The finale is a cracker with raspberry ice cream, mint dust, cranberry sour cream and rhubarb chutney.

It promises to be a delicious and educational evening. The winemaker evenings cost 99 euros for food and drink and take place regularly. Just keep an eye out for the Hoffgarten newsletter or Instagram. You can reserve a table by email at or by phone at +49 30 370 270 00.
