Potsdamer Platz is a multifaceted place: from shopping to cinema to exciting gastronomy, there are many highlights to be found here. One of them is the Vox Restaurant, on the ground floor of the Grand Hyatt, which features excellent Japanese and European cuisine, from sushi to dry-aged beef.

It is pleasant to sit in the spacious interior, where you can watch the chefs and sushi masters at work in the open kitchen. The cosy bar in the adjoining room also invites you to linger and is just crying out for a glass of whisky or champagne. However, we take a seat on the freshly furnished terrace. It is summer, after all.

Vox is located on the old Potsdamer Strasse, between The Playce and Spielbank Berlin, which is currently without traffic as it is a discreetly boarded-up construction site at the moment. This is good for relaxing on the terrace, as there is no traffic in the rather traffic-calmed area. So we can relax and enjoy our welcome sparkling wine.

We have already heard much about the local sushi, so we stay Japanese this evening. We start with edamame, sprinkled with horseradish as a little twist. The salted soy pods are a must at the Japanese restaurant. Our first course is gyoza, Japanese fried dumplings served on a bed of crisp, colourful lettuce. However, these are dwarfed by the unassumingly small but incredibly aromatic mushroom tea, a dark mushroom soup with chanterelles and grilled vineyard peach.

The team is experienced in Japanese cuisine, from the roots up, so to speak. Because as a highlight, real wasabi root is freshly grated at the table, not to be compared with the chewy paste you know from every sushi set you order. Before we experience that, however, we escape to Europe and enjoy some oysters, which are particularly interestingly dressed with shallot cherry and yuzu.

Let's get to the heart of the cuisine: high-quality sushi. We sample the vegetarian sushi platter, which replaces fish with avocado, egg, green asparagus and more. A worthy alternative, but the highlight remains the take sushi set, where we slightly underestimated the size. It's recommended for sharing with two people, after all. Six juicy pieces of sashimi, six generously portioned nigiri, as well as four pieces each of spicy mixed tartar and Philadelphia roll. The fresh wasabi and the especially fine Kamebishi soy sauce, matured for ten years, are the perfect accompaniments. Delicious.

As always, the nuanced differences lie in the quality. With its high-quality fish and friendly service, the Vox restaurant is a must-visit for sushi fans. We'll be happy to try the European cuisine on our next visit.
