Everything is still new. Not a single scrape on the leather upholstered bar, that looks like it was just brought in from the neighborhood gymnasium. The back of the customized bar from France is drenched in gold and shines amidst a small collection of vodka, whiskey and gin.

Even the owner, internationally successful architect Ulf Bohne, is still very modest about all that he's created here. Although his concept is working perfectly. He wants to cook for friends and do that well. To offer top-notch cuisine in a familiar atmosphere. Not more and not less.

In the kitchen these goals are realised by 26-year old Manuel Schmuck, who's had a respectable career despite his young age. He has put together a highly-skilled team of professionals to work with.

The blackpudding bread alone with its brioche-like appearance is enough to knock you off your feet. Even my anti-blackpudding dinner companion had to reconsider because of its goodness. You could send off any customer with a tray of this bread alone and a glass of wine, chosen from the list of 80 exquisite wines, and they'd be happy.

But reality on Grunewaldstraße is not that easy. Daughter Martha – yes, that's where the name comes from! - has always been a passionate cook. Ever since she was a child she's been taking over the baking at home and eventually even bowled out her father from his one kitchen.

She is part of the team now and is able to share her big passion in lovely ways at Martha's. From the appetizer to the mouth-watering dessert of chocolate-peanut cake, a scrumptious heap of sour cream ice cream and a pear-cardamom salad, everything was perfect. And we're already excited about the next time we're going to eat our way through the menu.

As soon as they find a bartender, the restaurant will turn into a non-smoking bar later at night to keep customers around for a little longer. All the while, just the way it works when you spend a night at friends', offering something delicious to snack on.
