.How to get there

Delicious, delicious, delicious, I thought when I was standing in the queue of Babu's Bakery & Coffeehouse. In the refrigerated section next to me are all the fine delicacies that are ready for take away. Among various salads, oriental couscous with apricots, grilled vegetables and mint yoghurt, sandwiches, original Bircher-muesli with pear and apple, cottage cheese cups with mixed berries, Greek yogurt with honey and almonds, and an assortment of chilled fresh Lemonade and iced teas.

The closer I approach the counter, however, my attention is drawn toward the many delights spread on the countertop. My God, what should I decide? Cheese cake, poppy seed cake, chocolate cake, raspberry cuts, cranberry rolls, Belgian waffles, spicy oat cookies, carrot cake, salmon bagel, gingerbread, parmesan and zucchini focaccia, or something on offer from the lunch menu? The selection is large and is a great mix of savoury and sweet temptations.

A friend recommended the Green Smoothie, which incidentally was the first smoothie offered in Zurich. The friendly staff clarifies that it is a mix of spinach, dates, apple, banana and mango puree. I decide to try this bright green vitamin bomb out, with a warm herbal vegetable, ham and Gruyere focaccia. Both are served to me at my table and taste every bit as good as homemade tastes. And is as good as everything here. Even the coffee is a house blend.

The café is Bohemian chic cosy. Lots of wood and many exciting collectibles, which the charming owner Sandra Kubista-Angst has collected from all over the world. The tables are all different. The chairs also. A thoroughly welcoming ambience!

The crowd is almost as varied as the seating. Singles, mothers with small children, business professionals, students, and older ladies who meet for coffee. Some pop in for an espresso, while others while away the afternoon in deep conversation, and many come to enjoy a quick, but delicious, lunch.

Babu's caters for special occasions and is open every day Monday to Saturday from 7am. But my secret tip is the brunch on Sunday, for which I absolutely recommend to make a reservation. Then they serve the very popular homemade Zopf – made without the egg.
