Even if you're not at the age when you're running around the garden looking for chocolate eggs, no one has to do without sweet treats at Easter.

Especially not in Vienna - a city where world-famous cakes were born, confectionery is still held in high esteem today, and the dearly beloved pastries have become a to-go sales hit in the lockdown.

At Easter, many sweet (and some savoury) creations are added to the already wide selection of treats. Here are some of our favourite culinary addresses where you can stock up for Easter brunch and snacks.

Bäckerei Felzl

What would an Easter breakfast be without fluffy yeast pastries, thickly spread with butter and jam? The Bäckerei Felzl, known for baked goods from a good tradition of craftsmanship, provides the basics: juicy Osterpinzen - recognisable by the cross that is carved with scissors before baking - and Reindlinge. The latter are traditionally filled with cinnamon, sugar and sultanas. However, because not everyone likes them, the Reindlinge at Felzl are also available with walnuts.
You can also order the Easter box in advance for Good Friday and Easter Saturday, filled with sweet and savoury treats for the traditional Easter snack.

Joseph Brot

The organic pioneers of Joseph Brot also bake up big at Easter: In addition to traditional Osterpinzen, golden yellow Easter bunnies also come out of the bakery. As always, all ingredients come from 100% Austrian organic farming; the dough is allowed to rest and is shaped by hand - craftsmanship that you can taste. From the pâtisserie, there are Easter egg oval-shaped macarons.

Because you have to eat something tasty between all the sweet dishes, the hearty Easter classic - ham baked in bread dough - is not to be missed. Joseph's comes from Styrian Woaz pork. In the vegan version, the ham is replaced by beetroot.

L’Amour du Pain

The team at L'Amour du Pain in the 6th district is not only in love with bread but also with all the sweet creations that our neighbouring country France has to offer. All those who have tried the Pains au Chocolates, Tartes au Citron or Millefeuilles know this. At Easter, the pâtisserie team conjures up beautiful chocolate Easter eggs, which - if you control yourself and don't eat them all at once - also make beautiful decorations on the Easter table.

Heu und Gabel

An Easter lamb peeks out from between crusty pieces of bread, colourful eggs lie in a basket on straw, and on the shelf next to the entrance, artistically decorated Fabergé eggs stand next to drinking chocolate in the shape of a rabbit and fine Easter chocolates. The Easter bunny has been busy at Heu und Gabel and has left a colourful selection of Easter delicacies for the delicatessen on Meidlinger Markt. In addition to the sweet Easter lamb, there are also Osterpinzen, Reindlinge and filled Easter wreaths. There is also the indispensable savoury classic: The Kasses bakery has teamed up with the Viennese butcher Thum for the Easter ham.

Gerstner K.u.K. Hofzuckerbäcker

A land of milk and honey for connoisseurs and a Viennese institution since its foundation in the 19th century, when the Gerstner confectionery was appointed official purveyor to the court in 1873 and with that K.u.K. Hofzuckerbäcker. The Easter bunny has also stopped by here with his sweet treats. Sweet, because the creations are made of the finest marzipan, chocolate and shortcrust pastry. Sweet, too, because the chocolates, biscuits and cakes decorated with mini carrots and colourful animals are a real feast for the eyes. If you don't live in Vienna, you can also order Easter bunnies and co. from the online shop and have them delivered to your home.
