.How to get there
For many reasons, I am not very fond of sausages. More often than not the ingredients are rather unknown – and are basically nothing more than low quality meat, additives and flavor enhancers in disguise. The sausage is, if you will, the one thing I will eat at a BBQ when nothing else is left. But every now and then, I crave a Berlin Currywurst so much I can't resist. And then, I do admit, I allow myself the full version with fries, ketchup and mayo. If you're going to do something, do it right.
On these rare occasions, there is no other place to go to than organic food stand Witty's on Wittenbergplatz. It's been there for 30 years, right across the street from KaDeWe. 'Germany's first food stand to sell sausages from species-appropriate and organic animal farms” and, further on, even making the step into their own organic production location to be able to offer their customers the best they can get. A step that was worth it all: I do not know of a better Currywurst in Berlin.
On site in Pankow, they work exclusively with certified organic meats and are proud to show that their sausages have 30% less fat than usual Currywurst variations. Their french fries and sauces are also homemade: the fries are made from a special organic potato breed and served in 'steak fries' cut, the sauce ingredients are all organic and natural too.
The Green Party politician Renate Künast lost a bet on 'Wetten, dass...' once and stood a whole day behind the counter at Witty's selling fries, meatballs and well, Currywurst. The food stand attracts celebrities and gourmets alike as it is, unlike Künast though they usually stand in line before the steel countertop. Just have some time on your hands, because at Witty's you will not get around the waiting part.
