The wine bar and restaurant of Il Calice are merged together well, with the bar in front and the dining area behind it. The classy wood panelling, the wall lamps made of murano glass, and a beautiful, puristic cabinet at the end of the room create a wonderful ambience.

There is a selection of over 400 wines, all of which are of Italian origin. The antipasti, a specialty of Il Calice, are excellent, including true ham and cheese delicacies, as well as fantastic fish specialties. Live jazz performances create an even classier ambience on Thursdays and Fridays.

Fine things such as D'Osvaldo prosciutto, an air-dried ham soft as butter- which, in all of Germany, can only be found here- and the exclusive variety of cheeses from renowned Italian affineur Guffanti, who has been working with cheese since 1876, can be found in the display cabinet.

The young chef is also fond of working with lesser-known sorts of vegetables, such as lacinato kale from Tuscany, radicchio, or crisp puntarelle, a special kind of dandelion.

Although all of the dishes are traditionally Italian, most of them have an international twist. Such as the fish antipasti, which are served with octopus over chickpea cream, marinated tuna and faroese salmon, as well as South American-inspired ceviche from yellow finned mackerel.

The "Paccheri do Gragnano e Polipo" – thick penne with octopus rigout and crisp bread – is exquisite, just like "Sgombro Con Guacamole" – a splendidly  prepared mackerel fillet with wild broccoli, pommes noisettes, guacamole, and sweet garlic.

The meat course "Manzo Rubia Gallega" is also met with enthusiasm. The dry-aged beef from Galicia is prepared with a breaded crust on the lava grill and served with flavourful romaine lettuce, parsnip purée, and "Bagna Cauda", a warm sauce in which the meat is dipped, similarly to fondue.

Il Calice is a piece of Italy in Berlin. From lunch to the apéritifs to the full menu in the evening. Or simply a glass of wine with a few pretty incredible antipasti.
