Somewhat hidden, I find the entrance to Teo Jakob in the heritage listed Löwenbräu Areal, internationally one of the most important centers for contemporary art. The showroom couldn’t wish for a better location in Zurich where, for Teo Jakob, art and interior design are inseparable.
In 1950 he took over his father’s upholstery and wallpaper operation and founded an exceptional avante-garde interior design company. In addition to his strong appreciation for aesthetic, quality design furniture, art was his greatest passion. Many of his friends were artists whose works were displayed in his showrooms. Over time, he had a remarkable art collection of around 400 paintings, sculptures and objects, which today are on loan to museums and can be found in the 10 showrooms.
Teo Jakob in Löwenbräu Areal is a true source of inspiration. Here individual pieces of designer furniture are not simply displayed, but authentic home environments staged. A duvet with a fine Egyptian linen cover, apparently thrown aside, lies on an E15 bed. In addition, a few bottles of Curiosity Cola stand on a side table, which gives you the feeling of just helping yourself. And with the same casualness in this scenario the art objects from Teo Jakob’s collection and hand-picked accessories are placed. Everything appears to be random and yet nothing is left to chance.
Each piece has been researched with great finesse for current and future trends and is truly superb. Among beautiful design objects from Vitra, B & B, Tom Dixon and Moooi, are select unique pieces and limited editions that in part have been designed exclusively for teo jakob. The offer ranges from pretty accessories on unusual individual furniture to master concepts in the living room and working area.
Teo Jakob have not only recognized trends, but have also influenced them. And so the business attracts not only customers interested in buying furniture, but also the trend-conscious young, an urban audience and art experts from neighboring museums and galleries. Teo Jakob has remained true: here art and design fully blend with each other.
