As we entered the restaurant Heugümper, we were first very warmly greeted by Pam Pfoster, who together with long-time chef René Suter, have run the restaurant since September 2014. We took a table in the recently refurbished rooms, taking in the new, more modern ambience, and are pleased that the traditional character hadn’t been lost inside the charming local old town restaurant.

Fortunately, also the well-known classics on the menu have remained, and so our choice was quickly made: the soup of the day -tomato and apricot - followed by tuna and lettuce with pomegranate seeds with herb dressing. And for the main course, the rolled Cordon Bleu with Truffle Brie and farmer’s ham. Together with a Château Poujeaux, which proved to be excellent.

René’s soup is always a good start. His creations are simply excellent, and it’s not without reason he has been awarded 14 Gault-Millau points. I asked him what his secret is, besides the freshness of his ingredients. "Well, the secret is banal," he replied, "we cook with much love!"

"For the soup, the vegetables must tighten slowly, a homemade vegetable stock is added and, above all, spices, butter and cream should not be spared." René has tried several times to remove the two main dishes from the menu. Without success. His patrons have consistently requested the dishes back on the menu.

The Tuna with wasabi peanut crust, ginger and mango sauce and sesame potatoes was so good, rarely have I been served a tuna so palatable. Slightly spicy and wonderfully aromatic. My companion was also extremely satisfied with his Cordon Bleu. Another classic excellently prepared!

While we considered the dessert, we noticed a few sightseers pass the window, peering into the restaurant. "There are always curious glances", explained Pam, "because the restaurant belongs to the Zurich Grasshopper Club, a Swiss sports club with a traditional soccer team." You don’t sense this in the lower part of the restaurant, however.

The first floor, the second part of the restaurant, is a little different. Trophies stand here in an elegant gallery, and the pictures on the walls document the sporting successes of the GC. These facilities, by the way, are used not only by the GC athletes for their club meetings, but are also open to companies and business events.
