Red roses as a sign of love or yellow sunflowers as a symbol of loyalty and admiration: flowers are beautifully shaped messengers of emotion - and at the same time possess a manifold symbolism in art, mythology, religion, literature, economics and even politics.

The new exhibition Flowers Forever at the Munich Kunsthalle is the first ever to explore all these exciting facets of flowers. On display in the museum's 1,200 square metre space are around 170 floral objects - from paintings to furniture, vases, sculptures, photographs, clothing and interactive media installations.

Alongside the creations of contemporary artists such as Andreas Gursky, Ai Weiwei and Viktor&Rolf, floral representations from antiquity to modern times are also on display.

Flowers Forever inspires with the different forms of representation and varied stagings that go far beyond the purely botanically correct depiction.

Especially worth seeing: the installation Calyx with 200,000 dried flowers hanging from the ceiling in the exhibition's last room. The young British artist Rebecca Louise Law wants to draw visitors' attention to the conscious, sustainable use of natural resources - and at the same time, enchant them in a magical, surreal way.
