San Michele Authentic Italian at Uhlenhorst

Hamburg Uhlenhorst is one of those chic, quiet neighbourhoods that always slip under the radar. Situated between Mundsburg and Winterhude, it is mainly a residential neighbourhood and, of course, an excellent place for a stroll along the Alster. But it's worth turning off after the Feenteich pond and heading for Kanalstraße, where Ristorante San Michele serves authentic Italian cuisine without the shi shi.

After a few location changes, the restaurant has settled on a corner in the quiet cobbled street and invites you to sit outside in summer and linger in the cosy interior in winter. Authentic Italian cuisine doesn't need to be fancy. And yet it doesn't always have to be the clichéd red and white chequered tablecloths and glasses of pasta either. San Michele finds an excellent way to combine style and comfort.

Dark wooden elements and a few discreetly placed paintings accentuate the bright, friendly room. Some tables and the area next to the open bar are adorned with traditionally painted Italian tiles. The expansive wine rack behind it awakens our desire for a hearty glass of Primitivo - after all, a good red wine touches the soul in winter. And for those who want to continue the enjoyment at home: the wines from the restaurant's own "Vinoteca" can also be purchased by the bottle.

In general, San Michele is not just a restaurant but also a delicatessen. Oil, tinned fish, sauces and many other Italian specialities are available to take away. There is also food to go, but we enjoy it on the spot. Italian specialities range from delicious antipasti to varied pasta, crispy pizza and delicate meat. And of course fish dishes.

Juicy parmigiana and a fresh insalata di polpo start things off. For the main course, we opt for stone pizravioli with sage butter and penne with truffle sauce, mushrooms and strips of beef. After all, a little truffle is a must at Creme Guides. Finally, a tiramisu is shared, and the pleasant evening is reflected upon. So, if you are looking for an authentic, cosy and reasonably priced Italian restaurant, Padrone Franco's Ristorante San Michele in Uhlenhorst is the place for you.
