Just across the street from famous hotel Louis C. Jacob there’s a charming little half-timber house. Soft candlelight shines through the classic Hanseatic casement windows. Dark wooden tables, shelves that reach the ceiling filled with empty wine bottles reminiscent of past celebrations and lush evenings, and pictures of jolly caricatures of the Jacobs family members adorn the sand-colored walls.

The staff is young, obliging and witty - they bring fun into putting together a menu and extensively discussing possible wine pairings. The concept is innovative and convincing: on the menu, you will find German wines only. Four different wine regions are represented and come with matching regional dishes. They rotate on a three-month basis. And that doesn’t happen without further ado - the switch is celebrated every time, with a wine party that includes a personal introduction of all winegrowers.

Our appetizer lets us feel the affinity to the opposite haute cuisine restaurant: Neufeld trout tartar with sour cream and coleslaw - we kept quiet and indulged. My main course: juicy pink tenderloin of the Eifel veal, served with bacon-wrapped salsify and potato crullers, sensational! Wine choice: a Tessin Bianco di Merlot “Chiar di Luna” - which translates to ‘moonlight’. My friend ordered a pike-perch fillet on spinach leaves and mashed potatoes with a foam of Riesling - and is just as excited! Along comes a flavorful glass of “Forster Ungeheuer” Riesling from the palatinate region.

Chef de cuisine André Franke re-interprets taditional dishes and manages to continuously fascinate his audience. We got to know new wines from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, some of whom are still widely unknown but definitely worth a leap in the dark. We’ll definitely come back for one of the wine parties, in fact, we’re already looking forward to diving into another informative and delicious wine experience!
