During my visit yesterday in the new Münsterhof restaurant I had the immediate feeling that everything was exemplary. I deliberated on what makes a restaurant special. Personally, a cosy yet up-to-date ambience with friendly and attentive service I find very important. And then, of course, the kitchen. Jovially, we can only agree with Jan Imbaumgarten, the Managing Director of Münsterhof, when he admits that he prefers a concise menu and says that these are usually more promising than "thick books".

The restaurant, which recently opened in February, has a menu that is definitely not a book and is limited: a small selection of starters, main courses and desserts, an alternating daily lunch and dinner menu, and a weekly "Grosse Pièce" that is a either a fish or roast. In addition, the menu surprises with a so-called Hans Waldmann burger and a small selection of Münsterhof Tartars, which also includes a vegetarian option.

We opted for the 4-course menu, although the Tartar sounded tempting. As a variation, the dinner menu can be ordered as 2- or 3- dishes with a small appetizer. Last night’s complete menu consisted of an appetizer of sea bream ceviche and spring salad, consisting of a ratatouille soup and ravioli al Plin in the middle, the highlight being whitefish fillets and prime ribs, and a dessert of marinated strawberries and a small cheese plate.

Knowing that the Münsterhof kitchen includes the lauded 16 Gault Millau point chefs Françoise Wicki and René Blaser, and that the restaurant provides the largest selection of wines from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape in Zurich, our expectations were high. We were not disappointed. The food was truly extraordinary! And the service impressive - very professional yet cordial.

The Münsterhof is particularly ideal for a romantic dinner, with a famous medieval secco mural on the first floor of the restaurant, catering for five couples and servants at the ready. A perfect, secluded setting for a lovely evening for two.

Finally, clarification for non-Zurchers remains as to who Hans Waldmann was. He was probably the most important Zurich mayor and guild master of the Kämbel guild, who also erected an equestrian statue at the Münsterhof depicting him. Even today, during Sechseläuten, the members of the guild lay down a wreath at the statue in commemoration.
