Have you ever sat to breakfast in a showcase? No? Well I have had the pleasure of this experience a number of times and must say- absolutely commendable! At the very least when you find yourself in the super cozy Café Marais. And no, you don't have to make it all the way out to Paris- a small trip to München's West End will do.

This wonderful urban retreat can be found in a former draper's shop, where you can nowadays enjoy a little bit of French flair. The current owners Alexandra Baumann and Barbara Schedel have repurposed an outdated storefront into a cafe with a number of surprises waiting in the various drawers and display cabinets: alongside vintage handbags and sparkling necklaces and earrings, beautifully wrapped Portuguese soaps complete the large assortment of cosmetics from the organic label Korres. And just one case further you’ll find retro dishes, stationary, and top-quality tees.

And in the windows? Comfortable seating spaces which, together with the guest lounging across them, create a sort of coffee house installation art.

If you’re particularly comfortable on the varied chairs, you can even take them home directly: most of the furniture is also for sale. Most of the individual pieces come from French flea markets and are constantly being newly updated and rearranged.

But back to breakfast. Enough to enjoy all week long, tailored to one's personal taste. The breakfast platter with an assortment of delicious cheeses, hams, and salamis is technically meant for one, but in combination with scrambled eggs and buttery croissants we found that it more than sufficed for the both of us. Hardly a crumb was left on our plates, as scrumptious as everything was. The only problem? We discovered a fine-looking yogurt with fresh fruit on the table next to us only too late and had no more room left to try it ourselves.

Even if you're not a breakfast person, the cafe will have something for you. A range of homemade calorie bombs sit far too alluringly in the cake display and the lunch menu offers a rotation of French bistro classics like Coq au Vin, fish soup with rouille, and steak tartar. Ricardo Asti, Marais cofounder Alexandra Baumann's husband and owner of Marais Soir across the street, and his kitchen spoons are big contributors to the menu. If the reputation of his restaurant is any indicator, this can't be a bad thing!

In summary: go, try, and enjoy the feeling of having made a small getaway to Paris.
