It was by pure coincidence that we ended up at Rosaly's. We were at Bellevue on a rainy evening and decided on the spur of the moment to get something to eat. We could have opted for one of the fine St. Galler Bratwursts at Sternen Grill, but we fancied somewhere a little more comfortable. Then we remembered Rosaly's, tucked away in a small alley behind the Vorderen Sternen.

My last visit to Rosaly's was a while ago and I remembered it as a cosy restaurant with good, traditional, country kitchen. It still is, but somewhat contemporary and stylishly up-to-date. I particularly like the modern lamps above the "communal table", the only table in the middle of the restaurant, to share with other guests. And this is where we sat.

On the menu you will find Rosaly's classic and Swiss specialties like G'hacket's - minced beef - with macaroni and Öpfelmues, Züri Geschnetzeltes - sliced veal, and Cordon bleu with french fries. My companion decided on the beetroot salad with fresh horseradish, followed by the Ossobuco with cucumber gremolata and white wine risotto. I opted for the butterhead lettuce and, for the main, the veal cheek Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad and cranberry-horseradish sauce.

We were remarkably pleased with our entrées, and even more with the main courses. The Wiener Schnitzel I would heartily go back for anytime - it was that good! My date was equally elated with his braised veal shank, which was succulently tender and piquantly seasoned.

For dessert, I couldn’t resist a Swiss classic: an iced coffee, which is different to traditional iced coffees prepared with vanilla ice cream. Here it is concocted instead with a creamily stirred coffee ice cream. A luscious conclusion to a delectable dinner!
