What a night I've chosen to go to restaurant Louis' – it's snowing big snowflakes from the sky and I've had to swap the suede high heels for robust lace-up boots with thick soles. Never mind, as long as the public transport's still working, in seven minutes I'll be from Bürkliplatz to the stop Rote Fabrik, Wollishofen. Later I learn from the courteous host that there are up to 20 parking spots out the front of the restaurant and I could've easily come by car.

Louis' is found in a light-flooded room with a view of the lake and the snowfall reminds me of the Snow Queen's glass palace. Most of the interior is decked out in white: the candelabra, the floor, the leather benches with pastel detailing - the view is breathtaking. I feel a bit out of place without my pumps. But manager Lars Krauss doesn't mind at all. A Valais native he, together with his business partner Verena Thalmann, has fulfilled a long-cherished dream of having a restaurant. Now he can cater for guests daily, regardless of whether they’re in a cocktail dress or in jeans and boots.

Befitting the weather, I order the Zurich Geschnetzeltes Louis' style, with crispy butter rösti. Prior to that, the lamb's lettuce salad with sherry dressing, cranberries, blue potato chips, bacon and baked quail egg. My companion selects the guinea fowl consommé with goat cheese and herb grissini, followed by the saffron risotto with a confit of Sicilian Datterini tomatoes and fried rocket. Chef Alfred Graf indulges us: spiced coffee mousse with grapefruit, a Granny Smith sorbet, a chocolate mille feuille, ginger and chilli mandarin sorbet, Röteli crème and tonka bean icecream. All small fireworks of flavor and we simply cannot decide which is the best.

If Louis' in winter exudes a magical atmosphere, I'm curious to know what it'll be like in summer when all the windows are open to the lake? I imagine the sun's warm rays reflecting the large glass windows, the Snow Queen departing and the Sun King taking the scepter. Then, my suede high heels will certainly be of use.
