Schwabing has something new to offer in terms of pizza, pasta, & co.: the Italian restaurant Comera opened its doors on Petra-Kelly-Str. only just a few weeks ago.

Here, it’s freshening up the steadily growing development area between Schwabing-West and Olympiapark with “stile e gusto italiano.” Owner Simone Pitanti has set high expectations for what is to be understood by that.

In the “pasta lab”, fresh noodle creations are prepared daily. Through a window, guests can watch how vast quantities of dough balls take on new form. They’re brought to the cooking pots in the completely open kitchen just a few steps later.

There, a conspicuously gleaming pizza oven draws the attention to itself. And the master of gastronomy experience is truly responsible for this arrangement: Comera’s interior design concept comes from the same architects behind the design of Munich’s Eataly food world in Schrannenhalle.

It’s been well-received by the citizens of Munich since day one. On our visit, we get the impression that it will be the same at Comera. Although the restaurant is so new that you have to walk over an unfinished footpath to get to the entrance, a large number of the tables are already occupied by guests.

We start with a basil spritz and grilled octopus with mashed potatoes, and a beef carpaccio garnished with thin slices of Granny Smith. Both fresh, both tasty!

The charming server tips us off that despite the pasta variations being listed as “Primi” on the menu, the portions are too large to leave room for the “Secondi” meat and fish dishes, so we only order a small taster portion.

Which- careful!- is still so filling that we struggle to finish off the entrecôte from the grill and the fish of the day, a gilthead. Both are cooked to perfection, and the freshness and quality of the ingredients is once again clear.

Sides are chosen à la carte at Comera, and the vegetables we order are so crisp and colourfully mixed, our meal sends spring vibes despite the rainy weather.

To try one of the tempting pizzas on top of everything else won’t be possible tonight. But looking at the satisfied faces of the guests with bits of leftover crust piled on their plates leaves a good impression.

We’ll just have to come back again. Preferably when the terrace and footpath are finished, and we have enough room for pizza and dessert!
