Two months ago, I was introduced to Scandic Berlin Potsdamer Platz as Europe's most sustainable hotel. Because of a visit to Hamburg, I was able to stay at Scandic Hamburg Emporio for the night and experience the Scandic Hotel concept first hand.

Just like its Berlin counterpart, the Hamburg hotel has received plenty of attention and numerous awards for its sustainability concept after opening its doors in December of 2012. All building and interior materials are carefully selected with a focus on ecofriendliness and durability, as well as the hotel's power supply provided by Greenpeace Energy.

Besides their beautiful designs, the rooms at Scandic Hamburg Emporio are laid out thoughtfully, too. The flush windows allow for as much daylight as possible to enter the rooms and reveal the view over old brick buildings and modern architecture. And while I took a proving look around the bathroom, the water kettle was already preparing some tea.

And what a beauty it was. Something I did not expect in a hotel with 325 rooms of that category. Care products are supplied by Swedish natural cosmetics brand FACE – packaged in smart refillable dispensers!

Before we get going for the city, we enjoy a sip of hot tea while taking the time to really soak in the ambiance of our room. We would absolutely just lay on the bed, enticing as it is, and let the time pass by – but Hamburg calling!

When we arrived back at the hotel later, we decided to make a stop at the bar first. To my great joy, they focus on gin and I got to taste a specialty from the river Saar by the name of 'Ferdinand'. Along comes a bottle of fresh filtered tap water – a much cleaner solution than transporting masses of water around the world.

We sleep the night away, those box-springs really are something! During breakfast, we are able to get to know the light-flooded amenities of the Nordic restaurant H2O. The coffee comes from fair trade, while most of the other products and ingredients are appear to be regional. And they even prepare my favorite vegetable omelette, right before my eyes in an open kitchen.

After our morning refreshment, we take the elevator up to our room one last time and get to enjoy yet another lovely water-related detail: as if you come up after diving, the lighting inside the elevator changes from dim to bright the higher you get, until you're washed ashore on your level. See you soon!
