Seven years ago, Sicilian-born art enthusiast and restaurant owner Lillo Cammalleri could not have chosen a better location than Klosterwall: Pane e Tulipani is nestled right between the art society and the Deichtorhallen exhibition site – thus, in the very art of the city's art scene.

You notice the ongoing artistry as soon as the patron's warm 'Ciao!' welcomes you: dozens of anthracite-colored chandelliers are hanging from the 6m ceiling, among them one disco ball, the massive oak tables are dressed in dapper white tablecloth and have neon green X-legs. And on the walls: a rotating selection of installations and paintings of young up-and-coming artists.

We started into our dinner with a warm asparagus salad, unexpectedly paired with a Rhine-Hessian Manz Riesling. After uninterrupted laughing and talking, we did not notice that time passed and our entrées were ready for us. Get ready to melt away: avocado au gratin, stuffed with spinache, topped with scamorza-truffata,cheese and sautéed beef strips in balsamic vinegar in a nest of varied salads. My partner had pappardelle with a crayfish ragout and saffron sauce, as well sautéed tiger prawns.

We did not exactly need to have dessert after those luscious meals, but we didn't want this night at Cammalleri's to end – so we agreed to have warm chocolate cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries. What a wise decision! And even wiser: to come back soon when the small urban terrace at Pane e Tulipani opens its doors to spring!
