Locations overview

Map (13)

Last week we already discovered that the best place to be when the temperature is above 30 degrees is by the water. But even when the occasional breeze cools the skin, we are drawn to the Spree, Havel and Landwehrkanal.

And while Berlin's most beautiful places by the water provided a little cooling and relaxation, we have now summarised the most beautiful gastronomic places near the water. After all, there's no better place to enjoy a summer dinner and cool drinks in the heat of the city than by the cool water on which the sun's rays dance.

The most beautiful terraces and beer gardens in Berlin are at least as nice, even if not necessarily on the water.

Click on the orange marked names to find out more about the individual locations!

Rutz Zollhaus

Yes, we love the Rutz and all its gastronomic offshoots and additions. The fact that the Rutz team is now also cooking at the Alte Zollhaus on the Landwehrkanal in Kreuzberg is a great stroke of luck. Because a nice dinner with a wonderful glass of wine, both enjoyed directly on the canal; it could hardly be nicer.

Weltwirtschaft

In the middle of Berlin, yet not too crowded, with buildings steeped in history and architecture all around you and the inner-city Spree running its course in between. On our very first visit, the Weltwirtschaft in the House of World Cultures suddenly became one of our new favourite places. A few friends, a delicious meal or an aperitif - the perfect summer evening on the Spree is as simple as that.

Milk-bar inside Funkhaus

Although the Milchbar itself is really quite lovely - sitting outside directly on the water is just that little bit nicer. Especially great: first rent a SUP from the Stand Up Club Berlin a few metres away and then fill your belly in the Milchbar. Here behind the Funkhaus, directly on the Spree, it really does feel like being on holiday with one of the best schnitzels in town.

Zollpackhof

In the Zollpackhof, Bavaria lies on the Spree. Sounds strange? Not at all. Here you'll find hearty Bavarian cuisine, Bavarian beer from the tap and a cosy beer garden in the shade of a large chestnut tree - all right on the Spree and with a view of the Federal Chancellery.

Bootsstegdinner Riethoen

A small jetty all to yourself, plus fine food from the patio galley and later a relaxed boat trip on the Riethoen through glittering Berlin in the evening. It doesn't get much more exclusive and closer to the water. And it couldn't be more romantic either.

Stella Bootshaus at Lietzensee

In the middle of the city and yet so "jrün" and idyllic that you can hardly believe it. The picturesque terrace of the Stella Bootshaus is not only at the Lietzensee, but also on it. Here you can get coffee, cake and ice cream, but also a variety of hearty snacks. But more importantly, the beautiful lake offers the perfect view of the Berlin Radio Tower from here. You can hardly get enough of it.

Van Loon Restaurantboat

The restaurant ship Van Loon is located at Kreuzberg's urban harbour and offers delicious food at any time of the day. It's particularly nice to sit on the wood-panelled ship's deck under masts. Behind the railing, you can watch numerous swans and ducks while enjoying an extensive Sunday breakfast. Or fresh fish & chips - they are said to be the best in Berlin.

Restaurant Carl & Sophie

Once upon a time, cheese and dairy products were produced here in the more than 100-year-old brick buildings directly on the Spree - by none other than Carl Bolle, whose name is still known in Berlin today. After the renovation of the listed buildings, you can now sit in the Carl & Sophie restaurant right on the Moabit waterfront and watch the shipping traffic. And all this with first-class cuisine!

Klipper Restaurantboat

The Klipper used to sail through the North Sea. Now it is anchored directly behind the Isle of Youth in Treptower Park and has gained a firm place in the culinary hearts of the city. From a large breakfast menu to changing lunch dishes, delicious waffles and tasty dinners - a visit to the deck is always worthwhile, but especially when the sun is shining.

Freischwimmer

Here, where the Landwehrkanal merges into the Spree - or the other way around - lies a real Kreuzberg institution. The Freischwimmer is so popular that it has been extended over the years and now sits enthroned on the water along almost the entire riverbank, making for long walks, especially for service. It looks a little cobbled together, but that doesn't make a stay any less charming. Here you sit with solid cuisine and tasty drinks, with a uniquely beautiful view of the water, swans and people paddling by and, of course, the Club of Visionaries directly opposite.

Club der Visionäre

Another Berlin institution, and it's lucky that the whole area was not affected by last year's fire. In the open-air bar on the riverbank, electronic music and disco balls invite you to spend a few carefree hours after work right on the water. A hip and special location with a magnificent view.

Ankerklause

The Ankerklause is simply cult. For more than 20 years, the pub has been a meeting place for a wildly mixed crowd at all times of the day. While things are gradually getting more and more chic over on Paul-Linke-Ufer, the Ankerklause retains its Kreuzberg harbour flair - including a juke box.

Fährhaus Caputh

From Kreuzberg, it's out into the countryside. In Caputh, on the picturesque Templiner See lake about an hour from Berlin, it's not just the beautiful surroundings that are extremely inviting for a walk. The extremely charming Fährhaus Caputh and the delicious food served here - including many classic German dishes - also invite you to linger. For dessert, by the way, it should definitely be a homemade sheet cake.
