The Zoologische Garten in Berlin was the first Zoo in Germany and is still the most diverse one in the world. The Zoo impresses its visitors since 1844 and draws them in, through its selection of many different species. Over 19,400 animals and ca. 1,400 species live on the 33-hectare site.

For many Berliners, the Zoo is part of their culture, since some of its animals achieved the Cult-status. For example, the polar bear Knut, the Hippo Knautschke and also the Gorilla Bobby. The new highlight is a Koala couple, which was borrowed by the Zoo from the Chinese government.

Next, to its vast selection of animals, the Zoologische Garten is also worth visiting for its architecture. When wanting to escape the hectic of the western part of the city, the Zoo is very welcoming for just lingering around. The first impression of the Zoo is already outstanding when walking through the big Elephant gate. The most popular spots are the giraffe enclosure and the seal pool.

There is also the Aquarium on the terrain of the Zoo. You can either visit it while being in the Zoo or separately. The Aquarium is one of the most diverse and modern aquariums in the world.
