Would I not already be living in the nicest city, I would be a regular at The George. In 2008 Kai Hollmann, Hamburg’s hotelier icon and London aficionado, opened up this so called New British Style hotel. Old British elements were re-interpreted and newly applied, all with a slight sense of humour.

Hamburg and London have much in common, but no other part of the city looks as much as the Kingdom’s capital a St. Georg. Open, multicultural, friendly and inspiring are typical associations with the district between the Alster and the city’s central station. And the hotel fits right in.

The entrance and reception hall welcomes guests into a light club atmosphere. You’re greeted with a great deal of politeness and familiarity around here. Interior designer Sibylle von Heyden did a wonderful job fusing English tradition, comfort and modern design with only a hint of glamour. The ground floor, apart from the rentable business Club Rooms and the restaurant Da Caio, also bears the house’s pearl: a classic British library with huge Chesterfields and a fireplace.

The bar is seamlessly aligned with the reception as well. Connoisseurs can choose between 130 whiskeys and I was told that if you order The George Martini they play the infamous James Bond theme song when it’s served. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a lot of business to take care of at The George next time I’m there.

118 rooms and seven suites make guests feel at home. The deep-pile dark colored carpet, all very British, calms down your every step. Eames Rocking Chairs, ornamented wallpapers, warm colours and modern photographs on the walls are proof that tradition and design go together perfectly.

On the terrace of the sixth floor Spa you can enjoy a massage with a view over the Alster. And with the Campari-Bar just one floor above, you don’t need to take any sightseeing tour because you can practically see everything from up there.

I love The George because I’m a fan of London. But it’s also the fact that you feel homey and comfortable from the first moment on. Even when I’m not here to stay, I at least take the time for a 30-minute Spa-Break-Massage during lunch break or …well, I pretend I’m James Bond.
