It was a Berlin reader's suggestion that led me to Hamburg's Fillet of Soul this past week. I remember peeking inside after an exhibtion at the Deichtorhallen two years ago, without even knowing what culinary delights to expect. There was no time to eat in that moment, so to us, this place stayed mostly unknown of until now. Another recommendation recently sent us to the „Haus der Photographie“ - the city's house of photography – this time around, for the cuisine. And what a good advice that was!

Living in Berlin, we are spoiled culinarily and were more than curious to see what 'creative, relaxed and non-touristy cuisine' would stand for in Hamburg – as this is what Fillet of Soul's website announces. From a daily changing lunch menu through tea and coffee favorites alongside cakes and Belgian waffles all the way to crossover cusine dinner items, some lighter, some more rustic, the menu alone caught our attention.

It was Friday night and the restaurant was fully seated. We were greeted friendly and were able to take a quick look at the very active kitchen staff on the way to our table. When we arrived, our eyes were focussed on the big slabs above the open kitchen that advertised nothing but delicious goodness. After an additional short briefing with the French waiter from Lyon we made a quick choice.

A Hamburg gin named 'Hook', a glass of Blanc de Noire named 'Deep Blue' of Tesch vineyard and a small mason jar filled with peanut chicken and pak choi were the introduction to an evening of only good impressions. Fresh bread and Cretan olive oil were served along naturally. Please continue!

The appetizers 'Veal Ragout-Hazelnut-Baklava with Date-Café-Glace and a Salad of Arugula and Parsley' as well as 'Currywurst 'Soulstyle' on Alibi Salad' were new and exciting interpretations that made us even more excited for the entrées to come.

The main course came in form of one beef tenderloin and one ribeye steak. '100% 4-Week Dry Aged Oldenburg Premium Beef'. The knife slid, the meat was medium perfection and tasted just the way a good piece of meat should taste. Along came thick homefries, Sauce Béarnaise and a watercress salad. - Why does no one care for that more often, anyways? It's delicious!

Utterly full and super satisfied we leaned back on our chairs. Espresso. Just before another highlight was about to arrive at our table: 'Ricotta Pancakes with Almond-Caramel-Butter, Blueberries and Popcorn-flavored Ice Cream'. Swoon! Especially the ice cream, which basically turned us into little children again. The plate was empty, but our fingers couldn't resist sliding along the table for that last bit of caramel sauce. Just too good!
