„Hamburg is just so nice!“, says my friend, as she glances from the restaurant's terrace across the entire Museumshafen. “Hamburg is so delicious!”, is what I thought while the friendly waiter was serving our order of assorted appetizers.

Das Weiße Haus, German for 'The White House', is one of my favorite restaurants. The charming white 19th century captain's house in Övelgönne has been dear to famous Tim Mälzer, who was chef de cuisine here before and during his career on television. In 2011, Patrick Voeltz took over and has been serving creative local cuisine ever since.

But back on topic, we were served four different appetizers on a big plate: goat cheese au gratin with lime mustard on a salad of asparagus, slices of delicate Bresaola, wild garlic soup with asparagus and tomato sorbet as a perfect match. The exquisite combination of hot and cold, the perfectly seasoned soup and the mild sorbet had us gushing instantly.

During the short pause between courses, we indulged in the homemade bread rolls with a paste of olives and curry as well as several kinds of olive oil with orange pepper and sea salt, so much so that we had to be careful not to eat our fill. My friend enjoyed her branzini filet, served on asparagus blueberry risotto – a fantastic combination – and I got corn poulard breast on a tangy puree of potatoes and mustard, and ratatouille, both impeccable! Berry sorbet and a dark chocolate crème brulée are the grand finale to this menu.

“Eating is a necessity, savoring an art” - this smart quote by François de La Rochefoucauld adorns the menu. Savoring really isn't that hard to do at Das Weiße Haus, the dishes are a gem, visually as well as flavor-wise. Creations that may seem surprising at first will convince you with the first bite. The terrace is a summer staple but the inside is just as charming, held in subtle hues of blue and white, natural wooden tables on rustic planks emphasize the nautical nature of the environment. Beautiful photographs of the Hanseatic city by Friederike von Vultejus give it the final polish.

Delightful Patrick Voeltz cooks at the highest stage and makes sure that his guests feel comfortable throughout their food experience. I am one of them, a faithful one at that, and I intend to remain one for much longer.
