Spreegold – Fresh Food Around the Clock
When it comes to food, I usually stick to the phrase 'Never change a winning team', which is why I have only had Spreegold's unfailingly good salads so far. While skimming the menu, I had only perceived headlines – pasta, sandwiches, soups, all things that, for several reasons, were not an option for me to begin with.
However, meeting one of Spreegold's two owners Mirko Zarnojanczyk last Saturday really showed me that it's worth taking a closer look. We sat down at their newest, and nicest location so far, situated on Schönhauser Allee, where his colleague Ralf Steinacker was getting busy behind the counter while we were discussing their concept and business philosophy.
Together, they had previously managed a chain of coffee shops starting out with 5 and reaching 36 locations when they decided to do things a bit differently themselves. They wanted to create something that puts more emphasis on the ever-evolving customer requests, in the freshest and healthiest way possible.
The result turns out to be greater than I ever expected. Even though I have talked about the stacks of luscious sandwiches and pastries filling the displays, but these three shops have so much more to offer than your usual coffee classics.
You will find steaks and burgers, made from a daily delivery of fresh beef brisket that goes on to be ground on site. The breakfast menu sounds as healthy as it is fresh, the juices could not be any fresher and everything is not just delicious but wholesome too.
Instead of conventional pasta, you can also opt for zucchini noodles. In addition, there is a Paleo section that serves grain-, refined sugar- and dairy-free meals only. Last but not least, a large selection, of course, is made vegan or vegetarian.
Finally, let me tell you that this place is even worth a cheat: cakes, pastries, waffles, Kaiserschmarrn and pancakes, or even just their porridge are so temptingly good that I'll at least make sure to try out the Paleo ones. Generally speaking, I hereby state to try out everything but the salads from now on.
