Lunette Selection – Spectacles as Works of Art
Merely three weeks ago, I stumbled upon a store on Torstraße that, in passing, I had assumed was a gallery. Light-flooded and spacious with fascinating lighting installed across the walls, it turned out to be an optician after all. Extraordinary glasses at that, that have found a suitable stage in this store.
Then, two days ago, yet another store caught my attention, this time on Prenzlauer Berg's Dunkerstraße – a cozy interior in warm shades of grey with soft carpeting and vintage furniture. A hint of 'Mad Men' with the touch of a modern boudoir. And again, the store is in essence all about specs.
I found out that these two completely different stores belong together, two distinct mise-en-scènes celebrating the same unusual concept. Lunette Selection does not just sell glasses, but any kind of spectacle you could think of: nerdy and panto frames, horn- and metal-rimmed glasses, antique ones as well as design classics.
Store owner Uta Geyer opened up her first Berlin shop in 2006. Despite their vintage look, however, Geyer does not sell second-hand products but unsold pieces she acquires from all over the world to bring into her two Berlin branches. A special highlight are her exceptional children's glasses on display at the Prenzlauer Berg store, with labels such as France's “Very French Gangsters” that'll make it easy for your little one to shine out.
I could've stayed there opening up drawer after drawer only to find one outstanding pair after the other. 'This has got to be the coolest thing for children', I thought and was proven right by Benjamin Klunker, one of the store's charming staff. The possibility to take some glasses home for a short trial period makes a buy all the more approachable.
In 2010, Uta Geyer initiated her own collection partly inspired by past looks, however, presented with a twist due to her very own way of re-interpretation. A whole team of designers works on her annual acetate-rimmed Lunette Collection that is manufactured in Northern Italy and sold in more than 20 countries around the globe.
Nevertheless you will also find new pieces by well-known labels in both stores. Beyond that, I shall note that you will experience highest expertise and care in customer service at Lunette: an optometrist examines your vision on Torstraße, experienced staff is fully at your disposal and will gladly advise you on all things color and shape and lastly, any rim is completed with only the best of lenses.
And most importantly: at the end of the day, every Lunette customer gets to leave with a unique work of art. Which means that ultimately, my initial idea of a gallery was not all that abstruse.
