Esther Thomas – In Love with a Swiss Lady's Couture
When I first discovered Esther Thomas' store 19 years ago – located on Pariser Straße at the time – her studio was just one year old. I remember exactly how I fell in love with it piece by piece, from blouse to skirt, from dress to coat, and how astonished I was by the lovely details. I fell so deeply, actually, that I decided to have my wedding dress custom made by Esther Thomas one year later.
These days, she is showcasing her customizable collections in one of the stores next to Savignyplatz. To this day, she has maintained the whimsicality that distinguishes her lines from the common off-the-rack fashion. She is still the seamstress in charge – in her studio around the corner.
The Bern-born designer who moved to Berlin at 23 describes her fashion as (unfortunately!) timeless, comfortable and fun. Blouses, skirts and dresses are her specialty, and she is known to pick fabrics that are somewhat out of the ordinary. During my last visit, I was able to watch someone else's fitting and once more concluded that there is no such thing as an ungainly body, rather than ungainly outfits. Everybody has personal charms, and Esther Thomas knows how to spotlight them.
A small selection is always in store up for sale, such as cardigans and sweaters, foulards and bags as well as children's clothing line the bob. Do not bother to look for famous brands. Esther Thomas is known for trying to find the uniqueness in everything: small manufacturers, preferably Swiss ones, with a focus on tradition.
Some of her finds may seem a bit daring, but regular customers still welcome all her choices openly. That is why I am pretty sure that those soon-to-come lambskin boots will sale like hotcakes. In addition to timeless pieces, Esther Thomas always has a surprise in store for you too.
