Dae Mon – Classy Korean Cuisine in Mitte
We were overwhelmed as soon as we entered Dae Mon restaurant, which had only opened the previous day. Not too visible from the outside, the light installation that leads you there is as subtle as the exuberant understatement found in the interior. Dark walls. The chairs are a design classic by Hans Wegner. A detached bar counter in the very middle of it all and an open kitchen in the back. The menu is one of the most beautiful designs I've ever held in my hands. Everything in here implies class. Even the staff – courteous, careful, perfect.
A whiskey with a slight hint of caramel and a Schweppes-less Gin Soda are served as aperitif. My friend is euphoric about and impressed by the staff's choice and expertise of the barrel aged spirit, and takes it in one sip at a time. Soft jazz tunes are playing in the background. Apparently ambiance is one of their specialties, too. 'Contemporary Korean Cuisine with high standards in quality, aesthetics and an open mind' are the ideals of the two owners, Hyun Wanner and Felix Pahnke, conceptualised together with the chef de cuisine. After dinner, we confirm: it works! Each dish that is served, is not only composed but also prepared to perfection.
From yellowtail amberjack with freshly ground wasabi through to squash soup with rice noodles and the 'King Oyster Mushroom' starter everything is impeccable. So are the main courses, 'corn-fed chicken and herb salat' as well as 'Black Angus with mashed sweet potatos'. Dae Mon is the kind of place that takes over quietly, without big scenes, until suddenly it's what everyone talks about. I see it reaching classics such as Bar Tausend Cantina easily. And all this while managing to make everything look as easy and effortless as it gets. We will definitely be back this month!
