Brunette — Rendezvous with the Coiffeur at Gleisdreieck
Brunette has been around for four years already. I can hardly believe it. I’ve been there several times over the years, in master hair dresser André Staack's casual and somehow enchanting salon in the depot of a Kreuzberg courtyard in Tempelhof Ufer.
The interior, brought to life by media and design office Deserve, feels effortlessly French and as fresh as on the first day. Warm, grey walls. Sulphur-yellow accents. A comfortable ambience. Brunette could just as easily be found in the Parisian Marais borough.
André Staack worked for salons in Mitte such as Shan Rahimkhan, Mod’s Hair, and Hanley’s Hair Company for over 20 years before deciding to open his own studio, where he could combine the revolutionary techniques of Vidal Sassoon with his own individual creative touch to create wearable cuts and perfect colours.
Alongside André and cofounder Henry Lemke, Jamie Taylor has been part of the Brunette team for two years now. Taylor learned his trade under André’s guidance at Hanley’s Hair Company, was a trainer at L’Oréal, and most recently worked at Wolfgang Zimmer in Mitte.
All three continue to educate themselves through exciting seminars and integrate the techniques learned there in their own work. The team at Brunette will also once again be taking part in the German Hairdressing Award- the German Oscars for coiffeurs.
Washing, treatment, and styling at Brunette is done with wonderfully aromatic products from Australian label EVO, packed in humorously labeled bottles. With the motto "saving ordinary humans from themselves", EVO is trying to give a dose of honesty back to the beauty industry.
I love André Staack’s canny manner more than anything. He always listens attentively, analyses the hair, and communicates thoughts, and never forces his own ideas. Even when colouring, he works with the kind of devotion that makes how much he loves his job go without saying.
The team is especially good at creating incredible effects through small changes that may never have crossed your mind. More than one person brought up my new haircut after my most recent visit. – For years, an appointment at Brunette has only been available far in advance, so definitely book your "rendezvous" and enjoy the anticipation!
