Bäcker Mann - Oven-Fresh Childhood Memories

Even though I discovered Bäcker Mann years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. This intriguing smell had lured me into the bakery and my eyes were in a frenzy over all the beautiful cakes that were on display. Fresh bread and rolls, cookies and raised pastry. Fruity and creamy, sweet as well as savory. AND they have my most beloved lye pastries. Ever since I was a child, a warm pretzel with butter is somewhat sacred to me.

Until the day I started a grain-free diet, I had to stop at every baker’s that had pretzels to try one. And even though pretzels are available everywhere now, they almost never match up to the original. Bäcker Mann has been and still is different. They know their craft.

25 years ago, Allgäu-born Herbert Heinig opened up his bakery on Südwestkorso in Friedenau and to this day, people line up and wait outside on the weekends. Another branch has recently opened up on Charlottenburg’s Pariser Straße. Here, too, everything’s handmade and baked fresh daily. No baking mixtures, no pre-baked pastries. Assure yourself by simply taking a peak into their open bakery.

Their cakes rank among the city’s best and can easily withstand any Swabian homemaker’s standards. Custom-made celebratory cakes for weddings, birthdays and anniversaries are available on request. And finally, they also have a lunch menu, consisting of freshly prepared Plats du Jour as well as coffee, cappuccino and more.
